KROKOS Crete

Paola, the owner, is an art historian, a tour guide specialized in the fascinating Pompeii, with a passion for travel and cultures, especially the Greek and Arab world.

Krokos Crete è figlia di tutto questo: una casa ottomana, nel bel mezzo del Mar Mediterraneo, sul lembo di terra più a Sud d’Europa, ovvero l’isola di Creta.

Krokos Crete is the daughter of all this: an Ottoman house, in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, on the southernmost strip of land of Europe, the island of Crete.

Protetta dalla Sopraintendenza archeologica, come tutto il centro storico di Rethymno, il progetto prima e i lavori di restauro dopo son stati condotti nel rispetto dell’edificio esistente, mantenendone l’anima ed esaltandone il carattere, pur adattandolo alle nuove esigenze di vita.

Protected by the Archaeological Superintendency, like all of the historic center of Rethymno, at the first project and then the subsequent restoration work were carried out respecting the existing building, maintaining its soul and enhancing its character, while adapting it to the new needs of life.

Ritroviamo così in facciata il tipico Sachnisi detto Kioski, un tradizionale tipo di bovindo che ricopre tutta la superficie del balcone permettendo di estendere dunque la superficie interna della stanza. Come l’originale è stato realizzato in legno, mentre le antiche grate delle finestre, costruite con la tecnica della mashrabiya e usate sia come schermo solare sia per proteggere la vista verso l’interno, sono ora dei magnifici elementi decorativi murali.

We find then on the façade the typical Sachnisi called Kioski, a traditional type of bay window that covers the entire surface of the balcony thus allowing to extend the internal surface of the room. Like the original, it was made of wood, while the ancient window grates, built with the mashrabiya technique and used both as a sunscreen and to protect the view towards the interior, are now magnificent decorative wall elements.

Proprio l’opera di pulitura di queste ultime ha permesso di individuare il colore autentico degli elementi lignei – serramenti e bovindo – e di riproporlo.

The cleaning of the latter made it possible to identify the authentic colour of the wooden elements – windows and bay windows – and to propose it again.

All’ingresso ritroviamo parte del pavimento originale a mo’ di tappeto, mentre la restante parte è stata realizzata con la stessa pietra locale di allora, usata anche per il piano di lavoro con lavello integrato della piccola cucina costruita su misura e parzialmente integrata sotto la scala.

At the entrance we find part of the original floor like a carpet, while the remaining was made with the same local stone of the time, also used for the worktop with integrated sink of the small custom-built kitchen partially integrated under the ladder.

Alcuni scalini sulla sinistra portano al livello del patari, soppalco, presente nella maggior parte delle case tradizionali, permetteva di stoccare materiali e prodotti al di sotto, mentre al piano si trovava l’area living con basse sedute e tappeti. Funzioni che sono state mantenute, utilizzando la parte bassa come lavanderia e ripostiglio.

A few steps on the left lead to the level of the patari, a mezzanine, present in most traditional houses, which allowed the storage of materials and products below, while on the floor there was the living area with low seats and carpets. Functions that have been maintained, using the lower part as a laundry and storage room.

Continuando a salire si raggiunge la camera da letto, estremamente luminosa grazie alle 4 finestre del kioski e connessa al piccolo, ma confortevole bagno.

Further upstairs is the bedroom, extremely bright thanks to the 4 windows of the kioski and connected to the small but comfortable bathroom.

Le piastrelle richiamano il disegno a cupola tipico del mondo arabo-marocchino, come altri elementi decorativi presenti nella casa, ma anche alcuni mosaici di Pompei nelle forme e nei colori.

The tiles recall the domed design typical of the Arab-Moroccan world, like other decorative elements present in the house, but also some mosaics of Pompeii in the shapes and colours.

Proseguendo attraverso il piccolo patio esterno su cui si affaccia un lato della camera, si raggiunge il tetto terrazzo da cui godere della vista del mare e della Fortezza veneziana di Rethymno.

Continuing through the small outdoor patio overlooked by one side of the room, you reach the roof terrace from which you can enjoy the view of the sea and the Venetian fortress of Rethymno.

Per finire il logo, disegnato da Vittoria Spinoni, ricalca il volto di una raccoglitrice di zafferano, Krokos in greco, ispirandosi agli affreschi della civiltà Minoica.

Finally, the logo, designed by Vittoria Spinoni, traces the face of a saffron harvester, Krokos in Greek, inspired by the frescoes of the Minoan civilization.
